Amazon Moreno Valley is Great for City

Amazon Moreno Valley is Great for City

Moreno Valley officials spent the past six months negotiating with Amazon.com to bring a fulfillment center to the city, and their efforts paid off this week.

The online retail giant announced Tuesday that it will build a 1.2 million-square-foot facility in Moreno Valley, much to the delight of city officials.

“We found out when everyone else did,” said John Terrell, the city’s community and economic development director. “We were confident, but until they made the announcement we weren’t sure it was going to happen.”

Amazon made the announcement while it was officially opening its San Bernardino fulfillment center. The Moreno Valley project will be the company’s fourth in California.

Probably the best news for Moreno Valley, which currently has an unemployment rate of 12 percent, is that the Amazon operation will create more than 1,000 jobs once its running at full capacity.

“There are some other benefits, like property taxes, but by far the major boost for us is jobs,” Terrell said.

Skechers, O’Reilly Auto Parts, Walgreens and Ross Dress for Less are among the companies that already operate major logistics operations in Moreno Valley.
