Western Riverside and San Bernardino counties are among the regions with a high concentration of Honda and Acura vehicles that contain a potentially deadly defect.
Officials with the California Office of Traffic Safety, Highway Patrol, Department of Motor Vehicles and the Bureau of Automotive Repair are urging Californians who own certain models of 2001-2003 Hondas and Acuras to correct a defective Takata airbag inflator, according to statement released today.
The vehicles are at a high risk of airbag inflator rupture. If that happens, pieces of metal can shoot through the airbag cushion and strike the driver or passengers, causing serious injury and even death.
All repairs are free of charge, according to the statement.
All parts of the stare are affected. Recall notices have been sent out, but state officials are concerned that some people have overlooked them or are ignoring them.
For more information call the DMV at (916) 657-6438 or the traffic safety office at (916) 208-8409.
