Agreement that has kept High Desert hospital open extended

Palo Verde Hospital in Barstow will remain open at least through October.

The six-month agreement reached in February that put Riverside University Health System in charge of the beleaguered hospital has been extended for three months, according to a statement.

That agreement between Riverside County, overseer of RUHS, and the Palo Verde Healthcare District has allowed the only emergency room and clinic in the greater Barstow area to remain open.

Palo Verde Hospital filed Ch. 9 bankruptcy in September after a long period of financial instability brought on by weak cash flow and depleted cash reserves.

Officials at the 51-bed facility also had difficulty securing emergency loans to remain in business.  Eventually, the hospital received help from Riverside County, Blythe, and the California Department of Health Care Services.

During the past six months the physician group Vituity has established 26 board-certified, emergency medicine physicians who providing 24-hour coverage, according to the statement.

The healthcare district continues to search for a company that will manage Palo Verde Hospital permanently.
