Passenger traffic at Ontario International Airport was essentially unchanged in January.
The facility handled 312,413 domestic and international passengers during the first month of this year, a year-over-year decline of 934 passengers, or 0.30 percent, according to data released Monday by Los Angeles World Airports.
The airport’s two international airlines, Volaris and Aeromexico, continued to post solid numbers: their passenger count went from 11,213 in January 2015 to 14,147 this year, an increase of 26.1 percent.
Ontario International handled 43,121 tons of cargo – both regular freight and mail – during January, a year-over-year increase of 11.7 percent.
Southwest Airlines was Ontario International’s top carrier during the last six months of 2015, carrying nearly 1.4 million passengers during that time, or 55 percent of the airport’s total passenger count, LAWA reported.
LAWA is the city of Los Angeles agency that owns Ontario International and Los Angeles International airports. It is has agreed hand over ownership of Ontario International to the city of Ontario this year, perhaps by this summer.
