The South Coast Air Quality Management District has been awarded $23.6 million from the state of California to conduct a demonstration of zero-emissions trucks that operate out of the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach.
The district, whose territory includes the Inland Empire, is teaming up with air quality districts in the Bay Area, Sacramento, San Diego and the San Joaquin Valley to test 43 trucks statewide said Sam Atwood, spokesman for the South Coast District.
Most of the trucks will be hybrid vehicles, but some will have pure electric engines strong enough to reach Riverside and San Bernardino counties, Atwood said.
The goal is to demonstrate that zero-emission vehicles are able to make short trips to and from the ports and then expand from there. The demonstration program is scheduled to start during the first quarter of next year and take about two years to complete, Atwood said.
