Cadiz project gains support

A cross-section of governmental agencies, trade groups, labor unions, water agencies and private organizations have given their formal support to the Cadiz Valley Water, Conservation, Recovery & Storage Project.

Eleven such entities filed “friend of the court” briefs last month declaring their support for the project, which would deliver water to customers throughout Southern California, according to a statement released by Cadiz.

The project, which is scheduled to begin construction next year, was approved three years ago by San Bernardino County and the Santa Margarita Water District and has since been upheld in court.

Those approvals have since been challenged in court by an environmental group and Tetra Technologies Inc. an oil and gas conglomerate in Texas. Their appeal is awaiting an appellate court decision.

The friend of the court briefs will be included in the appellate process, according to the statement.

The American Groundwater Trust, the California Building Industry Association, the California Business Property Association and the Association of California Water Agencies were among the agencies that filed briefs in favor of the Cadiz project, according to the statement.
