Moreno Valley will pay $1.2 million to settle a lawsuit filed by two former city employees.
Anne Schneider, a former building official, and Albert Brady, a code compliance manager, will each receive $600,000 in a settlement the city council agreed to in January, according to a report in The Press-Enterprise.
City Attorney Suzanne Bryant announced the agreement, which the council reached during a closed door session, at Tuesdays council meeting.
Brady and Schneider alleged that they were fired by the city in March 2013 for enforcing building code violations committed by former Councilman Marcelo Co. They also maintained that they were dismissed for reporting suspected violations and for refusing to break the law themselves, the report stated.
Deputy City Attorney Paul Early made similar allegations when he was fired, but Early was reinstated last October and later reached a $200,000 settlement with the city.
The vote in favor of the settlement was 4-1, with Mayor Jesse Molina voting no. Molina is the only council member who was on the council when the firings occurred, the report stated.
