Coachella Valley Rail moves forward

The Riverside County Transportation Commission has moved a step closer toward making Coachella Valley Rail a reality.

The commission recently awarded an $80 million contract to HDR Engineering in Claremont to start the next phase of the project’s environmental studies, according to a statement on the commission’s website.

When completed, Coachella Valley Rail will provide daily service along a 144-mile corridor that will connect the lower desert with Los Angeles County. In addition to multiple sites in the Coachella Valley, the rail project will stop in Riverside and Union Station in downtown Los Angeles.

“At its core, Coachella Valley Rail is about offering residents, visitors, and commuter’s better choices and smart alternatives to traveling solely by automobile,” said Raymond Gregory, commission chairman, in the statement. “While there is still work ahead, [this vote] brings us one important step closer to construction.”
