This week on Professionals of the Inland Empire (PIE), Homa Shaner and Michael Couper join podcast host John Tulac to discuss cyber technology, cybersecurity and artificial intelligence.
Homa Shaner is an IT strategist with Bridgepoint Technologies and has previous experience working for a cloud organization, a network company, and a cybersecurity firm. In her current role, she helps businesses find suitable IT solution providers tailored to specific needs, collaborating with over 300 providers. Her approach is agnostic, focusing on a deep dive into client needs and offering a wide range of solutions. Cybersecurity tools are crucial for protecting against threats and allowing smooth remote work access.
Michael Couper is the owner of CCS Interactive. He began his career as a software developer and programmer, ultimately specializing in website development. The key focus of CCS Interactive is to develop custom websites that stand out from competitors, avoiding templates and emphasizing unique branding.
In terms of technology and market adaptation, Couper balances in-house programming with pre-existing software solutions. He acknowledges the significant role of artificial intelligence (AI) in coding, emphasizing its benefits and challenges, especially how AI enhances productivity while raising concerns over job displacement in entry-level positions.
In regards to AI usage, Couper shares that extensive applications exist within development despite initial challenges and beneficial uses were identified following trials. AI’s role impacts the developer landscape by focusing on enhancing programmers’ efficiencies instead of replacing them. Tools like Cursor have been used as enhancing coding productivity and aiding rapid prototyping. AI is also useful in creativity and enabling situational adaptation for developers.
Homa recognizes the dual nature of AI concerning productivity and cybersecurity threats. She provides examples of how generative AI can be misused for cybercrime and insists on the continual updating and integration of protective measures against evolving threats. Significant data indicate over $10.5 trillion in current cybercrime costs, with projected growth underscoring the importance of preparation. Furthermore, Homa advises on implementing protective measures, including cooperation with Managed Security Service Providers (MSSPs), emphasizing the significance of clear communication with clients regarding adopting new technologies.
Both Homa and Couper agree that effectively utilized AI can enhance customer experiences, using examples such as improvements in banking customer interactions and problem resolution. It’s also necessary to utilize professionals when navigating modern technological landscapes, as the challenges presented by AI and technological evolution insist on continuous adaptation and expert guidance in business strategies.
