Electric truck maker to land in Riverside

A company that makes commercial electric trucks is moving to Riverside.

Voltu Motor Inc. will set up a manufacturing and research facility in the city that is expected to produce about 14,000 vehicles during its first three years in operation, according to a statement on Riverside’s website.

A timeline for that project was not disclosed.

Currently based in Sunnyvale, Voltu Inc. began in Argentina. It expects to create more than 400 jobs in Riverside within the next four years, and eventually reach 700 jobs.

“Voltu is well situated to meet a growing demand for electric trucks that will be required by local governments all over the state in the coming years,” Mayor Pro Tem Jim Perry said in the statement. “This opportunity benefits the city on many levels, from priority access to vehicles, to job creation and sales tax generation.”

Riverside has already received 20 Voltu trucks that it will use in its utilities, streets and parks departments, according to the statement.
