Estate and financial planning go hand-in-hand

On this week’s episode of Professionals of the Inland Empire podcast, host John Tulac talks with estate planning attorney Michael Ventimiglia (Taylor Simonson Winter) and financial planner M’Lissa Swift (LifeStep Financial), where they share their collaborative approach to help Inland Empire business owners and individuals manage wealth, plan succession, minimize taxes, and ensure asset transfer.

Ventimiglia, an attorney with a Master’s degree in Taxation, joined Taylor Simonson Winter in 2004. His firm, now exclusively focused on estate planning, utilizes revocable living trusts primarily for probate avoidance, rather than solely for estate tax minimization.

Swift transitioned from architecture to financial planning, joining LifeStep Financial in 2020. As Director of Client Experience, she helps business owners and real estate investors with comprehensive financial planning, including concierge services. LifeStep emphasizes a holistic approach, coordinating with various professionals and tailoring services to clients.

The two professionals collaborate to ensure holistic client outcomes. Estate planning considers a broader financial picture, including liquidity for estate taxes. They work together to ensure assets are properly titled within trusts and beneficiary designations are aligned, reducing probate risk. LifeStep acts as a coordinator, bringing in experts for smooth transitions.

Effective estate and financial planning requires coordination, particularly concerning trust strategies, asset titling, and ongoing client education. Revocable living trusts are now primarily for probate avoidance, though tax implications remain relevant. Reviewing plans regularly is vital to reflect life changes and evolving tax laws. Business succession planning necessitates clear communication and the use of tools like shareholder agreements. Financial planners ensure timely updates and proper asset alignment with trusts. Concierge services offer comprehensive support for business owners.
