Free sandbags in Moreno Valley

Moreno Valley is really getting out in front of El Nino.

First, the city asked for volunteers to fill sandbags in anticipation of the massive rainstorms predicted for this winter.

Now, it’s offering those sandbags to its residents, free of charge.

The city is making the bags available through April 30 of next year, or while supplies last, with a limit of 50 bags per household, according to a city statement.

Pre-filled bags, as well as empty bags and loose sand, will be available at various locations throughout the city, including fire stations and the City Yard Main Office, 15670 Perris Blvd.

Moreno Valley is justified in being wary of El Nino: The city underwent severe flooding the last time that weather condition hit Southern California, about 20 years ago, according to the statement.
