Golf Tournament Raises Money

Stater Bros. Charities hosted its annual golf tournament earlier this month.

The 9th Annual Stater Bros. Charities Dave Stockton Heroes Challenge at the Riverside Country Club raised $175,000, while bringing together six Medal of Honor winners and 17 professional golfers, according to a statement released this week.

Stockton, a former PGA Tour pro, and Jack Brown, Stater Bros. Markets’ executive chairman, hosted the event. Both men are San Bernardino natives.

Stockton, a 10-time winner on the PGA Tour, is probably best remembered for winning the PGA Championship in 1970 and 1976. He also played on the U.S. Ryder Cup team in 1971 and 1977 and  was the team’s non-playing captain in 1991.

This year’s tournament also honored first-responders to last December’s terrorist shooting in San Bernardino.

Money raised was donated to the San Bernardino Police Department and the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department to help each expand their community outreach programs. Funds were also donated to the Congressional Medal of Honor Scholarship Foundation.
