Grocers, union workers continue negotiations

The contract that covers most employees at three of Southern California’s largest supermarket chains has been extended indefinitely until a new contract can be reached.

The agreement between Albertsons, Ralphs and Vons and approximately 60,000 members expired Sunday, but a union official said its members will continue to be covered while a new agreement is worked out, according to a report first published in The Press-Enterprise.

Similar extensions were made in 2007 and 2011, the last times the contract between the two sides was negotiated. Talks are scheduled to resume Friday, followed by more sessions on March 21 and March 28.

About 6,000 workers in 70 Inland Empire store are affected by the contract. San Bernardino-based Stater Bros., the largest private employer in the Inland region, is negotiating its own agreement with the union, according to the report.
