Grocery Chain Looks to Save Energy

Stater Bros. is dimming the lights.

The San Bernardino-based grocery store chain is reducing by half the light it uses in all of its 168 stores as a way to save energy, according to a statement released Monday.

The move, which is being done seven days a week between noon and 6 p.m., is expected to save 425,000 kilowatt hours per month, enough to power 470 homes during that time.

The reduction began in June and is scheduled to last until Sept. 30.  Stater Bros. also hopes to reduce the likelihood of rotating power outages during the summer, when electricity use is typically at its highest.

Stater Bros. is taking several other environmentally friendly actions, including installing energy-saving LED-certified lighting in all of its refrigerated cases.

Stater Bros. has also put LED lighting on the sales floors in its new and remodeled stores, while recycling more than 73 million pounds of cardboard and 2.5 million pounds of plastic bags.

The U.S Environmental Protection Agency recently recognized Stater Bros. – the largest private employer based in the Inland Empire, with an estimated 18,000 employees – for its low refrigerant emissions, according to the statement.
