Innovation District Considered

Officials from Riverside’s business, education and government sectors are examining ways the city can create an innovation district.

The Innovation District Working Group will make recommendations to the city council regarding how to create such an entity and where it might be located, with the goal of creating a 21st century economy according to a statement.

Mayor Rusty Bailey, who assembled the group, told it he envisions “a place that combines transportation, housing, jobs and the arts to maximize creativity,” according to the statement.

The group is co-chaired by local entrepreneur Ted Weggeland and attorney Jack B. Clarke Jr. It will study successful innovation districts in other parts of the country.

The project is expected to take four to six months to complete, according to the statement.
