Legal maneuverings over OIA

The document that transferred control of Ontario International Airport away from Ontario and into the hands of the city of Los Angeles nearly 50 years ago will be subject to review by a judge.

Riverside County Superior Court Judge Gloria Connor Trask ruled today that she will hear a motion to dismiss part of a lawsuit filed by Ontario regarding control of the airport, according to a report in the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin.

That motion, filed by Los Angeles officials, asks the court to rule on whether certain documents between the two cities should be terminated, including the 1967 Joint Powers Agreement that transferred ownership of the airport to Los Angeles.

Ontario is expected to file a counter-motion that will ask the court to end that agreement. If it happens, terminating that agreement could be the first step in transferring control of the airport back to Ontario, the report stated.

Ontario International is owned by Los Angeles World Airports, which also owns Los Angeles International Airport and Van Nuys Airport.

Traffic at Ontario International has dropped to levels not seen since the mid-1980s, and Ontario officials are trying to get control of the airport so they can revive the facility.

The motion filed by Los Angeles, and anticipated motion by Ontario, are expected to be heard Oct. 31, according to the report.
