Moreno Valley receives clean energy award

Moreno Valley has been named a “Clean Energy Champion” city by Southern California Edison.

The public utility recognized the city for its conversion of more than 9,400 streetlights to brighter, energy-efficient LEDs, according to a statement on the city’s website.

That project saves more than 2.5 million kilowatt hours a year, enough electricity to power close to 250 homes for an entire year while reducing greenhouse gas emissions by nearly 600 tons.

“We’re proud of the work we’ve done to improve energy efficiency while reducing our environmental impact, and we continue to look for ways to do even more,” Mayor Yxstian Gutierrez said in the statement.

The award is scheduled to be presented virtually on Friday at Southern California Edison’s 10th Annual Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration.
