The superintendent of the Bonita Unified School District is stepping down.
Gary Rapkin announced during Wednesday’s board meeting that he will retire at the end of the upcoming academic year, according to a report in the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin.
Rapkin has worked in education for 35 years, serving as a teacher, principal, assistant superintendent and superintendent. He held the superintendent’s position with Bonita Unified for the last eight years, the report stated.
Before that, Rapkin spent 12 years as superintendent of the Mountain View School District in El Monte.
The 61-year-old Rapkin was praised for molding Bonita Unified, which serves public schools in La Verne and San Dimas, into a cohesive unit. Many at the meeting wept when Rapkin announced his departure, according to the report.
Rapkin’s last day on the job will be July 1, 2015.
