Affordable housing project breaks ground in Riverside

Next phase of affordable housing development in Riverside is underway

The second phase of an affordable housing project for low-income families and elderly people is under construction in Riverside.

The 209-unit Mulberry Gardens is being developed in the 2500 block of Mulberry Street, on four-acres once used by Cal Fire, according to multiple reports.

Eden Housing, a nonprofit in Hayward, is building the project. The second phase will consist of 15 units for low-income families. The first phase, which is still under construction, will be made up of 59 units for low-income older residents.

The project is being helped by a recent executive order by the governor’s office that instructs state agencies to convert underused properties owned by the state into affordable housing, according to reports.

“The state has taken huge strides to bring these sites online for those who need it most,” said Nick Maduros, government operations agency secretary, in a statement. “Because of projects like this, we are helping to address housing affordability issues in every corner of California.”
