After a two-year, $34 million renovation, the Plaza Theatre in downtown Palm Springs is about to reopen.
The historic building at 128 S. Palm Canyon Drive will reopen its doors Dec. 1 with a performance by Cynthia Erivo, Tony, Grammy, Emmy Award-winning actor, singer and producer, according to a statement on the theater’s website.
Erivo, who has also been nominated for an Academy Award three times, will be backed by Mark Meadows and the Palm Springs Pops Orchestra.
“Opening Night at the Plaza is the moment we’ve all been waiting for,” says John Bolton, the theatre’s general manager, in the statement. “We’re honored to welcome Cynthia Erivo for this milestone performance. It’s the perfect way to begin a vibrant new chapter in the Plaza Theatre’s story.”
Besides returning the theater how it looked in 1936, the building now has modern seismic reinforcements, better sound and projection systems, and a larger lobby. Also, the number of seats has been reduced from 800 to 700 to make the room more accessible, according to reports.
