Ontario International Airport’s summer travel season is off to a solid start.
The airport attracted 438,974 travelers in May, a 12.4 percent compared with May 2017, according to data released Tuesday.
Domestic passenger count was up 10.7 percent, international traffic 63.3 percent. The latter increase was due to daily service between Ontario and Taiwan added by China Airlines in March.
During the first five months of the year, nearly two million passengers traveled through Ontario International Airport, an 11.1 percent increase year-over-year.
More than 1.4 million people are expected to travel through Ontario International between Memorial Day and Labor Day, which would be a 12 percent increase, according to the Ontario International Airport Authority.
Besides the impressive increase in passenger traffic, cargo volume increased 22.1 percent in May: 63,258 tons compared with 51,793 tons in May 2017.
Ontario International Airport has seen a steady increase in passenger and cargo traffic since November 2016, when Los Angeles World Airports, an agency of the city of Los Angeles, gave up ownership of the airport and handed it over to local control.
