Ontario International Airport has received a $2.5 million grant that it will use to keep its airplanes cool while they’re not in use.
The money from the Federal Aviation Administration will pay for replacing 22 pre-conditioned air units that are used to keep planes and jetways comfortable while the planes are parked at a gate, according to a statement on the airport’s website.
Jetways are the portable bridges that allow passengers and crew to enter and exit the plane.
The external cooling and heating units, which are connected to the airport’s power sources, mean parked aircraft don’t have to use on-board auxiliary power units, which are powered by jet fuel.
The funding is from the FAA’s Voluntary Airport Low-Emission Program, which is meant to reduce carbon emissions. It comes several weeks after Ontario International received $4 million from the administration to pay for runway upgrades, according to the statement.
