Palm Springs begins outdoor dining program

Palm Springs starts its outdoor “al fresco” dining-in-the-street program today.

On Thursday, Palm Canyon Drive between Baristo Road and Tahquitz Canyon Way closed, one day before the program began, according to a statement on the city’s website.

Palm Canyon Drive, the city’s main thoroughfare, closed at 7 a.m.  Three southbound lanes will be cut to two lanes between Andreas Road and Tahquitz Canyon Way, where the full road closure will start.

From there, drivers will have to turn right to go west or left to go east. Alternate driving routes from southbound Palm Canyon Drive include Indian Canyon Drive, Belardo Road, and Calle Encilia.

Hundreds of free covered parking spaces are available at two downtown parking garages.

Restaurants that want to participate in the program may apply for a temporary land use permit. Interested parties should visit www.palmspringsca.gov/alfresco.
