Sgt, Abraham “Abe” Plata has been named the Indio Police Department’s public information officer.
Plata is in charge of press relations and social media, and he also oversees the department’s peer support team, according to a statement on the city’s website.
A native of Michoacán, Mexico, Plata joined the department in 1999 as a reserve officer, and was promoted to full-time status one year later. Plata’s duties have included patrol officer, detective, field training officer, school resource officer, and sergeant for the Community Outreach Unit.
“Sgt. Plata embodies the values of dedication, service, and community engagement that are at the heart of the Indio Police Department,” Chief Brian Tully said in the statement. “His experience and commitment to fostering relationships will ensure effective communication and transparency with our community.”
Plata has received several awards, including Indio Police Officer of the Year in 2012, and California State Assembly Officer of the Year in 2012 and 2013, according to the statement.
