Workers at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach are back on the job, now that a tentative deal between the dockworkers and shipping companies has been reached.
Details of the agreement have not been released, and both sides must approve the pact before it becomes official, according to multiple reports.
The deal reached Friday avoided a shutdown of 29 ports that would have blocked trade up and down the west coast. It’s also easing severe congestion that has been building for months at Los Angeles and Long Beach, the country’s two busiest ports.
The agreement affects about 20,000 dockworkers, all of whom have been working without a contract since July.
Both sides began negotiating last May, with little progress being made before last week. Imports and exports both stalled, and the shipping companies accused the dockworkers of intentionally slowing down on the job, the reports stated.
