Raisa wins two academic awards

Raisa Alvarado, an assistant professor of communications and media at Cal State San Bernardino, has received two awards from the National Communication Association.

Alvarado has won the Pedagogy Award from the association’s activism and social justice division, and the Scholar Activist Award from its feminist and gender studies division, according to a statement on the university’s website.

The Pedagogy Award recognizes educators who show excellence in teaching activism and social justice.

“Alvarado’s teaching, research, and activism are one and the same,” said José Ángel Maldonado, assistant professor of communication at the University of Florida, and Raquel Moreira, assistant professor of communication at the University of Maryland, in a joint statement.  “The idea that one can enact social change through intentional participation in one’s sphere of influence is central to Dr. Alvarado’s approach.”

Maldonado and Moreira nominated Alvarado for both awards, which will be presented at the association’s annual conference next month in Aurora, Colo.
