Holiday retail outlook is good, but not great

Record shopping predicted for Thanksgiving weekend

One hundred and eighty seven million people will shop during Thanksgiving weekend, three million more than last year’s record turnout, according to a National Retail Federation-Prosper Insights & Analytics survey.

Seventy percent of those surveyed (130.4 million) said they will shop on Black Friday, the most popular shopping day of the five-day spree that starts Thanksgiving Day and ends Cyber Monday, the survey reported.

Forty percent (74 million) said they will shop on Cyber Monday, and 36 percent (67 million) on Saturday. Fifty eight percent of consumers said they started their holiday shopping before Thanksgiving weekend.

“The holidays are an important part of many consumers’ budgets, and that trend is especially true this season,” said Katherine Cullen, said the federation’s vice president of industry and consumer insights, in a statement.
