Riverside approves council boundaries

Riverside has updated its city council ward boundaries.

More than one dozen maps were submitted during the past year by individuals, community groups, and the city’s consultant, Redistricting Partners, according to a statement on the city’s website.

Council members approved the boundaries on March 28 with a 6-1 vote. Councilman Chuck Conder cast the dissenting vote, saying he objected to a map that divides neighborhoods within his ward.

Council members believe the new borders comply with the state’s Fair Maps and reflect the city’s best interests, according to the statement.

“The community engaged for nearly a year and spoke through the Reshape Riverside process, and this map reflects that,” Mayor Pro Tem Clarissa Cervantes said in the statement.  “The city council  appreciates the effort and  comments that helped us get to this point.”

The new map, which can be found here,  will take effect 30 days after its adoption.
