San Bernardino County receives federal grants

San Bernardino County will receive $7 million in federal funding that will be spent on infrastructure and public safety projects.

The revenue, arranged by members of the county’s congressional delegation, will help pay for improvements to roads, animal shelters, and wastewater and sewer projects, according to a statement on the county’s website.

Behavioral health programs and the Sheriff’s Department search and rescue team will also receive some of the funding.

“This funding demonstrates what is possible when local priorities are elevated to the federal level,” said Supervisor Dawn Rowe, board chair, in the statement “We appreciate our congressional delegation securing federal resources that will have long-term benefits for San Bernardino County.”

The revenue is classified as community project funding, a practice formerly called earmarking. Community project funding allows Congressional members to secure federal money to pay for a project in their district, as long as that request is made during the yearly appropriation process, according to the statement.
