San Bernardino has opened a half-mile extension of State Street between 16th Street and Baseline Street.
The $7.4 million project, which is expected to improve traffic flow on the city’s west side, includes four lanes of divided road and new medians, sidewalks, streetlights, and storm drains, according to a statement by the city.
Opened Dec. 15, the extension has been in the works for about 20 years.
“The completion of the State Street extension marks a significant milestone in the city’s ongoing efforts to improve connectivity, accessibility, and the quality of life for our residents,” said City Manager Charles Montoya in the statement.
Construction began in October 2022, two months after the city council approved the project. It’s being paid for with city funds reserved for infrastructure improvements, according to the statement.
