San Bernardino will be allowed to remove homeless encampments, litter, and debris along state highways within its borders.
The city has joined the California Department of Transportation’s Encampment Delegated Maintenance Agreement, which effectively hands those duties over to San Bernardino, according to a statement on the city’s website.
The agreement was approved by the city council June 3 and signed by Caltrans July 17. San Bernardino will service rights-of-way owned by Caltrans along Interstate 10, Interstate 215, State Route 210, Highway 18, Route 66, and a portion of Highway 330.
The state will compensate San Bernardino up to $400,000.
“This agreement represents an important step forward to address homeless encampments along our freeways,” said Mayor Helen Tran in the statement, ”For too long, jurisdictional barriers have limited our ability to address these areas.”
Twelve other cities, including Riverside and Ontario, have joined the program. No other Inland Empire cities have agreed to participate, according to the governor’s official website.
The city of San Bernardino should definitely clean all the encampments out of the Streets first then focus on the highways😐😐😐
Does that include on and off ramps? If San Bernardino would apply for the Federal Government Grant, they could get millions.
