San Manuel Tribe announces charitable donations

The San Manuel Band of Mission Indians has donated $12.6 million to multiple charities in the Inland Empire.

The 228 grants, half of which went to Native American tribes, will “support crucial initiatives in the Inland Empire and across Indian country, according to a statement.

“The Spirit of Yawa’— acting on one’s beliefs— is at the heart of everything we do and has guided us since the days of our ancestors to serve those in need,” said Lynn Valbuena, chairwoman of the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians, in the statement. “It is our honor to make a difference for communities across the region and native people across the nation.”

Recipients of major tribal donations this year include:

  • Bad River Band of the Lake Superior Tribe of Chippewa Indian received $2.4 million to help the tribe’s supply power to the Bad River Health and Wellness Center, which will provide services to 2,400 tribal community members;
  • Time for Change Foundation, which received $500,000 to increase emergency shelter capacity and access to affordable housing. The grant will also help pay for employment development programs, and expand access to mental health assistance;
  • Make-A-Wish Orange County & the Inland Empire donated $450,000 grant to fulfill at least 78 wishes to Inland children suffering from a critical illness.

The tribe has made more than $400 million in charitable donations since 2003, according to the statement.
