A bill that would guarantee California workers at least three days of paid sick leave a year has been passed by state Assembly.
AB1522, which has strong support from organized labor and workers rights groups, passed by a 48-20 vote and will now go to the state Senate for its vote, according to a report in The Press-Enterprise.
The bill, which would have to be signed by Gov. Brown before it became law, would impact six million workers. Most of those workers have low-paying jobs that don’t offer sick time to all workers.
If passed, the bill go into effect on July 1 of next year. It would give workers one hour of time off for every 30 hours worked. After 90 days on the job, a worker could use the time for personal sick time or to care for a sick family member.
Business groups have said the bill, which is being sponsored by Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez, D- San Diego, will destroy jobs.
