State drops Carousel Mall lawsuit

The California Department of Housing and Community Development has dropped a lawsuit that threatened to delay redevelopment of the Carousel Mall property in San Bernardino

The department believes San Bernardino “is not in violation of the [state} surplus land agreement following its termination of the exclusive negotiating agreement [it had] with the San Bernardino Development Co,” to redevelop the mall, according to a statement on the city’s website.

“Housing and Community Development considers this matter closed,” said David Zisser, deputy director of the agency, in a letter dated May 24.

The letter elicited a prompt reply from the city’s top elected official.

“This is excellent news,” Mayor Helen Tran said. “We can now move forward.”

Demolition of the Carousel Mall began in April. The city is considering infrastructure improvements that could speed up the redevelopment of the site, according to the statement.
