Cathedral City has received a $4.5 million state grant that it will use to enhance its cannabis – related code and law enforcement.
The grant from the Proposition 64 Public Health and Safety Grant Program will help the city protect its 60-plus licensed cannabis businesses and police illicit activity related to that substance, according to a statement on the city’s website.
“Cathedral City faces a level of regulatory demand and public safety challenge that few cities of its size encounter,” the statement reads. “The grant funding will help the city meet those challenges while supporting the responsible operators who make up the heart of the local industry.”
City officials plan to use the grant to improve code enforcement of its cannabis businesses, upgrade its permitting process, expand environmental and health protections, and protect young people from health risks related to cannabis.
Cathedral City’s grant is part of a $227 million program announced by Gov. Gavin Newsom in June, according to the statement.
