Stater Bros. is scheduled to complete its “Harvesting Hope in the Summer” campaign today with a donation of 117,154 pounds of food to The Salvation Army’s Riverside County chapter.
The program, which began last month, will have given more than 400,000 pounds of food to Southern California food banks when that donation is complete, said Nancy Negrette, Stater Bros. Charities’ executive director.
Earlier recipients included the Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County, the San Diego Food Bank and The Salvation Army’s San Bernardino County chapter.
Every November and December, Stater Bros.’ patrons are asked at the checkout stand to purchase a “Bag of Hope” for $12 per bag. Each bag is filled with healthy food, including tuna, green beans, instant oatmeal, potatoes, apples, carrots and corn, according to a statement.
Food banks typically run low of supplies during the summer, mostly because school is out and more children are eating meals at home. That means their parents must buy more food, which puts a strain on some food banks.
San Bernardino-based Stater Bros. is the largest privately owned supermarket chain in Southern California and the largest private employer in the Inland Empire, with 168 stores and approximately 18,000 employees, according to the statement.
