Stater Bros. is raising its profile in Orange County.
The San Bernardino-based supermarket chain will open a store in Tustin next fall, its second in the city and its 31st in Orange County, according to a statement.
The 43,829-square-foot full-service store will be part of Tustin Legacy, a 1,600-acre mixed-use project the city is developing on the site of the former Tustin Marine Corps Airbase.
Regency Centers, a Jacksonville, Fla.-based company that builds grocery-anchored retail projects, will develop the store. The new Stater Bros. will feature wider aisles, a decor updated from the chain’s traditional look and an ATM.
The store will be next door to a full-service drug store and acute-care medical facility. It will also have a check-out stand for digital transactions, including money orders, Money Grams, and state lottery tickets.
“We’re thrilled at the opportunity to introduce a new Stater Bros.’ full-service format into this developing community,” said Pete Van Helden, the company’s president and chief operating officer. “The location is ideal, surrounded by new homes, easy access to the Metrolink and John Wayne International Airport.”
Stater Bros.’ other Tustin location, which is about half the size of the planned Tustin Legacy store, will remain in business.
Stater Bros. is the largest privately owned supermarket chain in Southern California and the largest private employer in the Inland Empire. It currently operates 168 supermarkets and employs approximately 18,000 people, according to the company’s website.
