Wednesday was a big day for Toyota in the Inland Empire.
First, Toyota of San Bernardino took a wrecking ball to one of the buildings across the street from it at the San Bernardino Auto Center on Showcase Drive North, the former Shaver Chrysler dealership.
That space, which will take several months to clear, will be used to display automobiles for sale and for some parking, said Cliff Cummings, owner of Toyota of San Bernardino and the main speaker at Wednesday’s event.
The demolition was the start of the first phase of the expansion and renovation of Toyota of San Bernardino, a project that is expected to cost more than $10 million. It will include giving the Scion dealership its own building, Cummings told the audience of about 100 elected officials and community leaders who attended the event.
“It’s going to be add, add, add,” Cummings said when asked to describe his future expansion plans, which are “We’re going to get a lot bigger.”
After the San Bernardino event concluded, Cummings and his staff trekked to Indio, where they hosted the grand opening of his Toyota dealership. Both events marked the first time Toyota ever began construction on one dealership and opened another on the same day, according to Cummings.
