Figgs, of CSUSB, receives award

Roderick Figgs, assistant director of Cal State San Bernardino’s GEAR UP program, has been named Professional of the Year by the National Council for Community and Education Partnerships.

Figgs provides access to standard testing to special needs students, arranging ACT tests in the community while also implementing the SAT Prep and SAT School Day in the San Bernardino City Unified School District, according to a statement.

GEAR UP remains as one of the largest and most effective programs focused on increasing the college and career readiness of low-income students in communities nationwide. 

Figgs was recognized for his dedication to his community, to the special needs community an the environment, according to the statement.

GEAR UP – Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs  – and the national council are both celebrating their 20th anniversaries this year. Both help underserved students pursue the education and training that will help them achieve their career goals, according to the statement.
