Walmart has installed its first California pickup tower at its Chino Supercenter.
The tower is a “high tech vending machine” that can fulfill an online order in seconds, according to a statement.
Customers choose an item from www.walmart.com and select the “pickup” option at checkout. When the item arrives at the store, it’s loaded into the pickup tower, where the customer collects it by scanning a bar code sent to their smartphone.
“The Pickup Tower pilot phase has been so successful that Walmart has expanded it to California, and we’re proud and excited to house and introduce the first one in the entire state here in Chino,” said Lawrence Meza, manager of the supercenter, in a statement. “We’ve had a great time showing customers … this new way of shopping.”
Walmart already has 200 pickup towers throughout the United States. It recently announced plans to add 500 more, including five in California, according to the statement.
