San Bernardino County’s Fraud, Waste and Abuse Hotline handled 86 cases in 2018, according to a statement.
Sixty one of those cases were investigated and closed while 25 remain open, San Bernardino County Auditor-Controller/Treasurer/Tax Collector Ensen Mason said in the county’s first-ever Fraud, Waste and Abuse Hotline Report.
Of the 61 closed cases, 22 were determined to be unfounded, five were sustained after investigation, one was referred for legal action, one was exonerated and three occurred in other jurisdictions.
“Communication with the public as well as stopping government fraud, waste and abuse are my fundamental priorities in office,” Mason said in the statement. “The public has a right to know what this office is doing to clean up San Bernardino County government.”
Members of the public are encouraged to call the Fraud, Waste and Abuse Hotline at 1-800-547-9540 or send an email to [email protected] if they see anything that looks like fraudulent spending or misuse of taxpayer dollars.
