The Inland Empire posted a 4.6 unemployment rate May, down 0.3 percent month-over-month, but below the 4.9 percent estimate of one year ago, according to the state Employment Development Department.
During the same period, California’s unemployment rate was 4.7 percent, while the national unemployment rate was 4.1 percent. None of these numbers take into account seasonal factors that typically affect the job market.
Between April and May, non-agricultural jobs in Riverside and San Bernardino counties fell by by 3,600 jobs, to a total of 1,720,600.
Professional and business services lost the most jobs month over the month, dropping 1,800. Most of those losses were in professional, scientific, and technical services (down 1,000), followed by job administrative and support, and waste management and remediation services (down 800).
Government added 400 jobs between April and May, the most of any sector.
Year-over-year, non-farm employment in the inland region added 2.000 jobs, a 0.1 percent increase. Private education and health services added 17,600 jobs, the most of any sector during that time, the department reported.
