Riverside City College’s Culinary Arts program has received a $100,000 grant from the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Division of Workforce and Economic Development.
That money will be used to develop a two-year apprentice program in which employers sponsor apprentices, curriculum development, equipment purchases and apprentice recruitment, according to a statement on the school’s website.
“The purpose of the apprenticeship is to further the education and training of men and women for careers in culinary arts, food preparation and related industries,” said David Avalos, associate professor of culinary arts, in the statement.
“The apprenticeship program has been designed to provide future culinarians with the training … required in a highly skilled profession.”
That training model has been used for centuries because it gives restaurants of all sizes a skilled workforce. The program will mix classroom and/or lab instruction with on-the-job training in which the apprentice is paid a salary or wage, according to a statement.
