City to decide fate of short-term vacation rentals

Cathedral City will hold a special election today to decide how it will deal with short-term vacation rentals.

If approved, Measure B will leave in place the city’s current regulations, which were approved by the city council after “one year of community engagement and feedback,” according to a statement on the city’s website.

Ordinance 182, which was passed after the city received multiple complaints about noise, crime and other disruptions from short-term vacation rentals, mandates tighter restrictions on night-time activities.

It also limits the number of guests that may stay in one dwelling place.

Measure B is the only item on today’s ballot. If approved, it will leave Ordinance 182 in place. A no vote will eliminate the specific regulations in that ordinance regarding short-term vacation rentals and revert to the city’s municipal code, which does not address public safety, noise, and other complaints made during the past several years, according to the statement.
