Newman named Corona police chief

Robert Newman has been named Corona’s chief of police

A 25-year veteran of the department, Newman has replaced George Johnstone, who retired last year after two years on the job, according to a statement on the city’s website.

Newman has held multiple assignments with the department, including officer, detective, supervisor of the K-9 unit and relief watch commander.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in public administration with a minor in criminal justice from California State San Bernardino, and is a graduate of the Sherman Block Leadership Institute.

Newman took over as chief March 30.

“It takes many years of training and experience to be prepared to serve effectively in this capacity, and it is rewarding to see one of our own earn the opportunity to lead,” said City Manager Jacob Ellis in the statement.
