Victorville has received a $28 million grant from the California Department of Housing and Community Development, money it will use to build a homeless shelter and medical clinic.
The Wellness Center campus, the first facility of its kind to be built in Southern Calfornia, will include a recuperative care facility, medical clinic, interim housing, and wraparound support services, according to a statement by the city.
Construction of the 4.5-acre campus, at 16902 First St., is scheduled to begin next year.
“We are extremely grateful to the state for this grant that will help the City of Victorville achieve our vision of constructing this facility to help homeless individuals stabilize and rebuild their lives,” said Victorville Mayor Debra Jones in the statement. “Our Wellness Center Campus was born from a strategic plan developed with our Homelessness Solutions Task Force just two years ago.
“We couldn’t be more excited to begin putting these grant monies to good use in tackling the issue of homelessness in our city.”
The project, a major component in the High Desert city’s effort to end its homeless problem, will cover nearly 30,000 square feet of construction when completed, according to the statement.
