Ontario International Airport continued its COVID-19 comeback in August, topping pre-pandemic passenger levels for the sixth consecutive month.
More than 511,000 passengers passed through Ontario International last month, a 1.4 percent increase compared with August 2019 and a 9.3 percent increase year-over-year, the Ontario International Airport Authority reported Wednesday.
August was also the fourth consecutive month that Ontario International’s passenger count exceeded 500,000.
“Ontario International continues to rank among the fastest-recovering airports in the United States, serving one of the most dynamic population and economic centers anywhere,” said Alan D. Wapner, authority president, in the statement. “Nearly 10 million Southern Californians live or work closer to Ontario International than any other airport, and more and more of them are recognizing Ontario … as a Southern California aviation gateway.”
Domestic and international travelers totaled more than 497,000 and 14,000, respectively. The airport’s domestic passenger count was up 3.8 percent compared with August 2019 and 9.5 percent from August 2021.
Ontario International’s air cargo handling also continued to grow: 71,700 tons of freight passed through the airport in August, 6.8 percent more than August 2019 and five percent more than two years previously, the authority reported.
