SB building permits rise

San Bernardino building permits bounced back strongly in 2022.

The city issued 6,093 permits last year, a 42.6 percent increase compared with  2021 and the most permits approved in any recent year, according to a statement on San Bernardino’s website.

Last year’s permits were worth $363.8 million, up $132 million year-over-year, a 57.2 percent rise.

“These numbers show that people are investing in San Bernardino,” said Mayor Helen Tran in the statement. “There is a great deal of opportunity here and I am glad to see people are taking advantage of it.”

Building permits do not include the cost of architecture or buying property, so they don’t represent a project’s total cost. Government projects also are not calculated.

“I expect these numbers to increase further in 2023 despite the national economic headwinds,” said Nathan Freeman, director of the city’s community, housing, and economic development agency, in the statement. “We have a number of large projects in the queue, and our phone continues to ring with developer interest.”
