Hemet breaks ground on skatepark

A groundbreaking ceremony was held March 28 at the future site of a skatepark in Hemet.

Gibbel Park Skate Plaza will cost $2.2 million, most of which will come from the American Rescue Plan Act, according to a statement on the city’s website.

C.S. Legacy Construction in Pomona is the lead contractor. Construction is expected to start within the next several months – an exact date has not been announced – and be completed this fall.

“Our objective at the skatepark is to [develop] a healthy and engaging lifestyle for the people we serve,” said Mayor Joe Males in a statement. “We value our kids and want them to grow up in a healthy environment where they have outside activities.”

Hemet officials began considering developing a skate park in 2018 when a study found strong community support for such a facility. In 2020, the city council hired New Line Skateparks, Inc. in British Columbia to design the project.

Council members approved the park last year. Gibbel Park is at 2350 W. Latham Ave.

  1. Why do we have to go outside the US for someone to design the project? No one locally for both construction and design!? Why…

  2. With SO MANY Homeless People Needing HELP, Why The Devil is The City of Hemet Making a Terrible Decision To Spend Over $2 Million Dollars on a Skate Park!!! There Seems To Be NO COMNON SENSE IN HEMET, Any Longer!!!

    • Last I checked Pomona is still in the US. LOL I agree we need to help the homeless

    • Yeah so smart let’s waste all our money people who already far gone from saving instead of making an investment into the actual people who give a damn.

  3. I think this skate park will be a wonderful addition to hemet. Maybe it will keep kids from doing other things instead, like selling drugs or joining gangs or theft
